Pool chemistry is the part of pool ownership that trips up even attentive homeowners. You test, you adjust, you wait 24 hours, you test again — only to find the pH has drifted in the opposite direction. That's not operator error. It's the nature of pool chemistry: bather load, summer heat, UV exposure, afternoon rainstorms, and off-gassing CO2 all shift your water constantly. A manual test captures one moment in a system that never holds still.

Automatic chemical dosing controllers address that problem directly. Here's what they do, what they cost, and whether one belongs in your build.

What a Dosing System Actually Does

A chemical dosing controller is three things in one: a sensor array, a dosing pump, and a controller that connects them. Probes installed in your pool's circulation line monitor water chemistry continuously — typically every 15 to 60 seconds — and trigger small, precise chemical additions to keep your water balanced before it drifts out of range.

Most systems monitor two parameters:

**pH** — held between 7.2 and 7.6. When pH climbs (which it does naturally as CO2 off-gasses), the controller doses a small amount of muriatic acid or injects CO2 gas to bring it back down.

**ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential)** — a real-time measure of how effectively your sanitizer is working. When ORP drops, the system doses liquid chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, or increases your salt cell's output if you have one. ORP responds faster to demand changes than a direct chlorine reading, which is why it's the standard for automated systems.

The result is a pool that corrects chemistry in real time instead of reacting to a weekly test.

The Main Systems Worth Knowing

Three platforms dominate the residential market:

**Pentair IntelliChem** integrates cleanly with IntelliTouch and EasyTouch automation. It manages pH and ORP via two peristaltic dosing pumps, logs history, and connects to the ScreenLogic app so you can monitor what's happening from your phone.

**Hayward OmniGuard** plugs into the OmniHub platform with similar pH and ORP control. If you're already on Hayward's automation ecosystem, it's the natural fit.

**AutoPilot Total Control** is platform-agnostic — it works with most existing equipment and is the right choice if your setup isn't built around Pentair or Hayward.

Hardware cost typically runs $700–$1,200. Professional installation and commissioning adds $200–$500. Ongoing chemical costs — the liquid acid and sodium hypochlorite the system doses — are roughly the same as what you'd buy manually. You're automating the delivery, not reducing the chemistry.

Where Automatic Dosing Earns Its Keep

Variable use is where these systems matter most. If your pool sees heavy weekends, the occasional party crowd, and quiet weeks in between, chemistry swings are constant. A dosing system catches and corrects a pH spike at 2 a.m. on a Sunday — before Monday morning's swim.

In the Carolina climate, the case gets stronger. Heat accelerates chlorine demand. UV breaks down stabilizer faster. Summer thunderstorms dilute chemistry and drop pH unpredictably. A system monitoring continuously handles those swings before they become visible problems.

And if you're running a salt cell, the pairing is especially effective. The controller's ORP reading can drive the salt cell's output automatically, so the system increases chlorine production during heavy use and backs off when the pool is quiet. You stop manually adjusting the dial all summer.

What Dosing Systems Don't Cover

A dosing controller monitors pH and ORP — not total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid, phosphates, or salt level. Those parameters still require manual testing, typically once a month. Think of dosing automation as handling about 70% of your weekly chemistry work, not replacing the full monthly review.

The probes also need attention. ORP and pH sensors should be cleaned and re-calibrated every 60–90 days. Homeowners who skip this step lose confidence in the system when readings drift — and rightfully so. The system is only as accurate as its sensors.

No controller replaces looking at your pool. Clarity, color, and surface condition tell you things probes can't catch.

Whether It Belongs in Your Build

For most homeowners building in the $80,000–$200,000 range, adding a dosing system during construction is one of the better equipment decisions. Installed at build time, you're typically looking at $1,000–$1,800 total. Retrofitting it later costs more and is harder to position cleanly.

The right candidates: pools with heavy seasonal use, homes that may be rented or managed remotely, or homeowners who simply don't want to think about water testing every week. If you enjoy the hands-on maintenance routine, you may not feel the return.

The key is to make this call during the design phase, not after. Dosing ports, chemical storage space, and controller placement are straightforward to plan up front — and awkward to add once the concrete has cured.
