About Sherrills Ford
How does building a pool work in Sherrills Ford?
Sherrills Ford takes its name from Adam Sherrill, who led his eight sons across the Catawba River here in 1747 - the first documented European settlement this far west in the Catawba Valley, with a formerly enslaved man named Vaul recorded as the area's first Black settler. The actual crossing point doesn't exist as dry land anymore: when Duke Power's Cowans Ford Dam impounded the river into Lake Norman in 1962-63, the ford itself went under open water. A fieldstone monument Sherrill's descendants raised in 1929 still stands on Sherrills Ford Road, not far from where the lake now begins - the town's name literally outlived the place it names.
Since the 2010 census, the unincorporated Sherrills Ford community has technically been folded into the larger Lake Norman of Catawba CDP, though the 28673 ZIP still functions as its own distinct market - bordered by Terrell to the south and east and Catawba to the northwest, on the Catawba County side of the lake where lots run larger and quieter than the Mecklenburg County shoreline. It's the quietest, most rural-feeling of the Lake Norman markets, and most Sherrills Ford builds we deliver have a bigger deck footprint than their Mecklenburg County equivalents simply because the lot supports it.
The 606-acre Mountain Creek Park, Catawba County's largest trail system for hiking, biking, and trail running, sits inside the same ZIP as most of our Sherrills Ford builds. It's a real factor in what buyers ask for here: pool decks and outdoor kitchens built for trail-day recovery as much as lake days, with covered rinse stations and shaded lounging near the equipment pad coming up in design conversations more than almost anywhere else we build.
Catawba County permits move quickly, usually 3-4 weeks. Soil is clay-heavy with occasional rock outcrops near the shoreline, and we engineer footings and rebar per soil report rather than by template. Kids here are zoned into Sherrills Ford Elementary, which feeds Mill Creek Middle School and Bandys High School. Northview Harbour and Mountain Creek both run HOA architectural review covering deck material, equipment screening, and shoreline grading - we walk every submission through with you, same as on the denser Mecklenburg County peninsulas.

FAQ
Pool questions, answered for Sherrills Ford.
How much does a pool cost in Sherrills Ford?
Most Sherrills Ford concrete pools run $130,000 to $230,000, with lake-facing freeform builds reaching $280,000+. Fiberglass installs run $75,000 to $130,000.
Can you build a freeform or beach-entry pool in Sherrills Ford?
Yes. The larger lots in Sherrills Ford suit freeform and natural-edge designs better than tight Mecklenburg sites. Beach entries with embedded boulders and tanning shelves are popular here.
How fast does Catawba County permit a pool?
Plan on 3 to 4 weeks for Catawba County to issue a residential pool permit.
Do you serve Northview Harbour?
Yes. Northview Harbour is one of our regular Sherrills Ford communities. We handle the HOA architectural review submission.
What's the most popular pool style in Sherrills Ford?
Naturalistic freeform shapes with embedded boulders, beach entries, and dark interior finishes that read like an extension of the lake.
Why is it called Sherrills Ford if there's no river crossing anymore?
The original ford - where Adam Sherrill's family crossed the Catawba River in 1747 - now sits under Lake Norman. Duke Power's dam flooded the crossing point in 1962-63, but the community kept the name. A stone monument on Sherrills Ford Road marks the approximate spot, close to where today's shoreline begins.
