Concord's founding is basically a peace treaty. German Lutheran and Scots-Irish Presbyterian settlers, who'd moved into the area down the Great Wagon Road from Pennsylvania starting in the 1740s, spent years arguing over where the newly formed Cabarrus County - cut from Mecklenburg in 1792 and named for Speaker of the House Stephen Cabarrus - should put its courthouse. The compromise site, laid out in 1795 and incorporated in 1806, was named Concord, meaning "to bring into harmony." It's been the county seat ever since.

Cabarrus County also holds a genuine American first: in 1799, twelve-year-old Conrad Reed found a 17-pound gold nugget in Little Meadow Creek on his family's farm - the first documented gold discovery in the United States, sparking a gold rush that predated California's by half a century (the Reed family reportedly used the rock as a doorstop for three years before anyone realized what it was). Reed Gold Mine, established in 1803 a short drive from today's Skybrook and Highland Creek subdivisions, is now a North Carolina state historic site.

Modern Concord's biggest single landmark sits inside city limits: Charlotte Motor Speedway, built in 1959-60 by Bruton Smith and Curtis Turner, has hosted NASCAR Cup Series racing - including the Coca-Cola 600 - every year since 1960, plus the Cup Series' first road-course playoff race on the 2018-added ROVAL and the zMAX Dragway next door. That racing economy, plus Concord Mills' retail draw, has pulled steady growth into the newer subdivisions on the north and east side of town.

Lot character still splits along that old-town/new-subdivision line: in-town Concord lots near the historic Union Street courthouse core tend to be tighter, with mature trees and established utility easements, while Skybrook, Christenbury, and Highland Creek's newer estate-scale lots give us more room for vanishing edges, raised spas, and full outdoor kitchens. Soil is consistent piedmont clay across both, so excavation moves predictably year-round. Cabarrus County permitting is moderate-pace - typically 4–6 weeks - and review staff is reasonable to work with on stormwater questions for the tighter downtown-adjacent lots.
