Davidson is small, deliberate, and design-conscious, and that character traces back to the town's own name. It's named for Revolutionary War Gen. William Lee Davidson, who was killed defending a Catawba River crossing at the Battle of Cowan's Ford in 1781 - the same crossing Duke Power dammed nearly two centuries later to form Lake Norman itself. His son sold 469 acres to the Concord Presbytery in 1837 to found Davidson College, and the town grew up around the campus rather than the other way around, which is why tree-shaded quadrangle architecture and a walkable Main Street still set the tone.
