TL;DR
- -Don't drain your pool before a storm. In saturated Carolina clay, an empty concrete shell can float, crack, or shift — the water's structural weight is what keeps it in place.
- -Shut down your automation system and all equipment before sustained winds reach 30–35 mph. Power surges and outages can damage smart controllers; shut down cleanly at the panel.
- -Lock in your chemistry the day before: shock the pool and bring pH to 7.6–7.8. Storms introduce heavy debris loads and hundreds of gallons of acidic rainwater — you need a strong reserve going in.
- -Secure every loose poolside item before the wind arrives — furniture, umbrellas, inflatables, planters. A patio chair at 40 mph can damage interior pool finishes.
- -After the storm, inspect the equipment pad for damage before restoring power, clear surface debris before running the pump, and fully rebalance water chemistry before anyone swims.
- -Run the pump continuously for 24–48 hours post-storm to filter the system back to normal. Plan on algaecide in August — water temps of 85–88°F plus no circulation equals fast bloom.
Your Pool Has Its Own Emergency Checklist
Every summer, the same weather alert scrolls across phones from Charlotte to Mooresville: a tropical system has organized and is moving inland. Most homeowners scramble for flashlights and bottled water. Pool owners have an additional list — and if you skip it, you're looking at damaged equipment, contaminated water, and a cleanup that drags into September.
The good news is that a properly prepared pool comes through Carolina tropical systems remarkably well. The ones that struggle are almost always the ones whose owners made a few preventable mistakes in the hours before the storm arrived. Here's how to avoid them.
24–48 Hours Out: Secure and Shut Down
Start above grade. Remove every loose item from the pool deck: furniture, umbrellas, flotation toys, inflatables, planters, and anything else that can catch wind. A patio chair hitting your interior pool finish at 40 mph will leave a mark — and marks in plaster or pebble finish aren't cheap to fix. Store movable items in the garage; use heavy-duty straps for anything too large to move.
Turn off your pool automation system. Smart controllers — Pentair IntelliConnect, Hayward Omnilogic, Jandy iAqualink — can behave unpredictably during power surges or outages. Kill scheduled runs and switch the equipment to off at the panel.
Your pump can keep running until the storm gets close. Circulation helps preserve chemistry during the hours you can't actively maintain it. Shut everything down, however, before sustained winds hit 30 to 35 mph.
The Most Common Mistake: Draining the Pool
Don't.
An empty pool sitting in saturated Carolina clay — especially anywhere in the Lake Norman corridor or across the Piedmont — is at serious risk of floating, cracking, or shifting. Hydrostatic pressure from waterlogged soil has enough force to lift a concrete shell partially out of the ground, snapping underground plumbing in the process. The structural weight of the water is what keeps the pool anchored where it belongs.
Keep the pool full. If it's already at the waterline and heavy rain is forecast, drop the water level two to four inches below the tile line to create room for runoff. Nothing more than that.
Lock In Your Chemistry Before the Storm
The day before a named storm or significant tropical system, shock the pool with a quality chlorine product and bring your pH to the upper end of the ideal range: 7.6 to 7.8. Storms introduce heavy loads of debris, pollen, organic material, and hundreds of gallons of slightly acidic rainwater. You want a strong chemical reserve going in, because the water won't have any help while the pump is off.
Add an algaecide if you have one available — especially in August, when water temperatures in the Carolinas regularly push 85 to 88°F. Algae blooms happen fast when heat, debris, and zero circulation combine. Don't wait for green water to notice the problem.
Leave your skimmer baskets in place. They'll intercept floating debris and are far easier to clear after the storm than tracking material down to the main drain.
What to Do With Your Pool Cover
If you have an automatic pool cover, whether to close it depends on the storm. For a properly installed cover rated for debris load, closing it before a strong storm can protect the interior surface and reduce chemical contamination. In sustained winds above 50 to 60 mph, however, track damage becomes a real concern. Check your manufacturer's wind rating first, and when in doubt, leave it open.
Mesh safety covers that anchor to the deck are built for weather exposure — they're generally fine to leave deployed through a storm. Solar blankets are a different story: they should be completely removed and stored inside before the system arrives. A loose bubble cover in 50 mph wind is a hazard, not protection.
After the Storm: Work in the Right Order
Resist the impulse to hit the switch and restart the pump. Three things need to happen first.
Inspect the equipment pad for standing water and visible damage. Check for debris around pump intakes, water intrusion near electrical conduit, and anything that looks physically displaced or cracked. If anything looks off, call a licensed electrician before restoring power.
Clear the pool surface with a net before running the pump. A heavy debris load in the first filtration cycle can clog baskets, overwhelm the filter, and put unnecessary strain on the motor.
Test and rebalance the water before anyone swims. Expect lower pH — rainwater is mildly acidic — along with reduced chlorine and shifted alkalinity. Test all parameters and bring everything back into range first.
Once the water is balanced and the surface is clear, run the pump continuously for 24 to 48 hours to flush the system fully back to normal.
Storm Prep Takes 90 Minutes. Skipping It Takes Weeks to Undo.
A pool that goes into a storm properly prepared — chemistry locked in, equipment shut down, loose items stored, and water level maintained — typically comes through Carolina tropical systems with nothing worse than a few hours of skimmer cleaning.
The pools that don't fare as well are the ones that were drained beforehand, had equipment sitting exposed to debris, or had pump motors restarted before the equipment area was checked. None of that has to happen.
