The Electrical Work Behind Your Pool: What to Plan Before the First Shovel Hits

Pool electrical planning is the most overlooked part of any custom build — and one of the most expensive to fix after the fact. Here is what every homeowner needs to understand about circuits, sub-panels, bonding, and conduit before construction begins.

Your Pool Has a Serious Electrical Appetite

Your pool runs on roughly as much electricity as a small HVAC system — and most homeowners don't learn that until the electrician walks the job site and starts quoting sub-panels. By then, the excavation is done and the trenches are already being planned around someone else's assumptions.

Electrical planning is the piece of pool infrastructure that deserves a conversation before your design is finalized, not after. Here's what you need to understand before ground breaks.

What's Actually Drawing Power

A custom pool with a modest feature set puts real demand on your electrical panel. Walk through the load item by item and the numbers add up quickly.

Variable-speed pump: Modern 1 to 2 HP variable-speed motors draw roughly 700 to 1,500 watts at peak, but spend most of their time running at low speeds and pulling far less. The circuit still needs to be sized for the maximum draw — typically a dedicated 20-amp, 240-volt breaker.

Pool heater: Gas heaters are light on electricity — just an igniter and controls, usually under 15 amps. Heat pumps are a different story. A 100,000 BTU heat pump draws 5,000 to 8,000 watts and needs its own dedicated 240-volt circuit sized at 40 to 50 amps.

Spa or hot tub: If your project includes an attached spa, add another pump for the blower, a dedicated heater circuit, and controls. A full spa package can require an additional 50 to 60 amp circuit on its own.

Pool lighting and automation: LED underwater fixtures are efficient, but a full installation with deck jets, accent lighting, and perimeter wiring still needs a dedicated low-voltage transformer. Control panels like Pentair IntelliCenter or Hayward OmniLogic require both power and data lines run to a weatherproof enclosure at the equipment pad.

Salt chlorinator and audio: A salt system adds another 120-volt, 15-amp circuit. If you're running in-ground speakers or amplifiers near the pool, add their power and wiring runs to the list.

Add it all up, and a typical custom pool build requires 100 to 200 amps of new service capacity just for the equipment pad — before any outdoor receptacles, a pool house, or future additions.

The Sub-Panel Question

Most homes can't tap pool circuits directly from the main panel when the equipment pad sits 60 to 100 feet away across the yard. The standard solution is a dedicated sub-panel — typically 100 to 200 amps — installed near the equipment pad. That sub-panel needs a dedicated breaker in your main panel with capacity to spare, plus conduit run underground through the same trenches as your plumbing.

Here's the snag: if your home's existing electrical service is already near capacity — common in older homes or houses with EV chargers, whole-home generators, or existing hot tubs — you may need a service entrance upgrade before the pool project can close out. That discovery, made late, adds $3,000 to $8,000 to your budget and weeks to your timeline. Find out early, before design is locked and the excavation crew is scheduled.

Bonding: The Safety System Nobody Mentions in the Sales Process

Equipotential bonding is one of the most important safety elements in pool construction, and it almost never comes up until the inspector walks the job. Every metal component within 5 feet of the pool — handrails, ladders, light housings, pump housings, the steel rebar in your pool shell — must be electrically connected to a common copper bonding conductor.

Why it matters: if a fault develops in any piece of pool equipment, bonding prevents a voltage difference from building up between metal surfaces in or around the water. That voltage gradient is what causes electric shock drowning — a real hazard that kills swimmers every year in improperly bonded pools. Bonding is not the same as grounding, and both are required by NEC Article 680. Make sure your contractor and electrician treat them as two separate, inspected line items — not as the same task.

Run Extra Conduit While the Trenches Are Open

This is the advice that saves homeowners the most money over the life of a pool, and almost nobody takes it because it requires thinking about your future backyard before it exists.

When trenches are open during construction, have your electrician install empty conduit runs — just PVC pipe — to locations you might want power or data later. At this stage, it costs $200 to $500. Retrofitting conduit through a finished patio costs $3,000 to $10,000 in paving removal and replacement alone.

Future additions that benefit from pre-run conduit: outdoor speakers and amplifiers, landscape and path lighting, security cameras and access control, pool house electrical service, a second outdoor sub-panel for an expanded entertainment area, or an EV charger near the backyard. Pulling new wire through existing conduit is a one-hour job. Cutting up travertine to install conduit after the fact is a two-week project.

What to Ask Before You Sign

Before you finalize a pool construction contract, confirm whether electrical work is included in the scope or the homeowner's responsibility. Some builders work with a preferred licensed electrician; others hand that coordination off. Either way, get one point of contact ensuring the equipment list matches what the electrician is sizing circuits for.

Ask specifically: Is a sub-panel included in the bid? Is conduit run for future additions while trenches are open? Is equipotential bonding inspected before the deck is poured?
