The Part of Your Pool Design Nobody Talks About Until It's Too Late: Equipment Pad Placement

The equipment pad is one of the first decisions in your pool design and one of the most overlooked. Here is how to get placement, noise management, screening, and utility access right before the concrete is poured.

What's Actually Going on That Pad

Your pool design has been obsessed over for months—finish color, coping material, the exact arc of the shallow end. Then someone asks, almost as an afterthought: 'Where do you want the equipment?' Most homeowners wave a hand toward the side of the house and say 'somewhere over there.' That single moment will shape how you live with your pool for the next 20 years.

The equipment pad is where your pump, filter, heater, automation system, and salt chlorinator all live. It's not glamorous. But bad placement creates problems that are expensive to fix, annoying to live with, and impossible to ignore once you notice them. Here's what to know before the concrete is poured.

A typical custom pool's equipment pad holds more than most homeowners expect: a variable-speed pump, a filter (sand, cartridge, or DE), a heater or heat pump, an automation control box, a salt cell if you're going saltwater, and possibly a UV or ozone sanitizer. Add the check valves, unions, and gauges that connect it all, and you're looking at a pad that's often 6 feet wide by 10 feet long at minimum—larger for elaborate systems. Plan for that space early, not as a leftover slice of your backyard.

How Far from the Pool Can It Be?

There's a physics limit hiding inside every equipment layout: suction lift. Your pump can only pull water so hard. Industry guidelines limit suction runs to roughly 50–75 feet from the pool's main drain or skimmer. Beyond that, you lose efficiency, increase wear on the pump, and risk cavitation—essentially, the pump sucking air instead of water, which destroys impellers fast.

The return side is more forgiving. But every additional foot of pipe adds resistance your pump has to work against. A pump located 50 feet away and elevated 4 feet above grade isn't running the same as one placed right beside the pool at grade.

For most residential projects, equipment pads end up 10–40 feet from the pool shell. That's the practical sweet spot: close enough for suction lines to work efficiently, far enough to create some visual separation from the pool itself.

The Noise Question

Variable-speed pumps are much quieter than the single-speed units of 20 years ago. At low speed, they're nearly silent. At full speed, they produce a consistent low hum. Gas heaters add combustion noise. Heat pumps add fan noise. On a quiet evening in your backyard, equipment placed 8 feet from your seating area becomes background music you never chose.

Before you place the pad, think about where you actually sit outside in the evenings. Is there a bedroom window within 25 feet? Where does your neighbor's patio sit? Most experienced designers aim to place the equipment pad around a corner—tucked behind the house, behind a fence line, or separated by a gate—so the sound has to travel around something before it reaches human ears.

Screening Your Equipment

Whatever you decide about placement, plan to screen it. Exposed equipment pads are eyesores, and many HOAs require them to be hidden from street view. Fence panels—matching your existing pool or yard fence material—are the simplest option. Louvered screens allow airflow while blocking sight lines, which is important when you have gas heat or a heat pump that needs ventilation. For a softer look, ornamental grasses, boxwood, or arborvitae work well; give plants 18–24 inches of clearance on all sides so a technician can reach everything without moving landscaping.

Never fully enclose the equipment. Pool heaters and heat pumps need ventilation. A sealed enclosure causes premature failure and creates a carbon monoxide hazard with gas units. If you build a structure around the pad, leave open sides or install proper venting.

Gas, Electric, and Clearance

Your equipment pad needs two utility connections: electrical service (typically a 240V circuit for the pump and automation, possibly a second for the heater) and, if you're using gas heat, a gas line. These runs add cost every foot they travel. A gas line run 80 feet from your main service will cost significantly more than a 20-foot run. Placing the equipment pad near an existing utility entry point—like where your HVAC pad already sits—can save $1,000 or more in rough-in costs alone.

Also plan for working clearance on all four sides. A technician needs to reach every piece of equipment without crawling under a deck or removing landscaping. Two feet of clearance on all sides is the minimum. Three feet is comfortable. Equipment jammed under a low deck might look tidy, but it turns every future service call into a headache—and service calls add up over 20 years.

Plan It Now, Not Later

Equipment pad location drives your plumbing layout, your electrical rough-in, your gas line path, and your landscaping plan. When it gets decided late—or changed mid-construction—it creates a cascade of rework and added cost.
