Here's what's actually available, what it costs, and how it all fits together.
Surface Wave Alarms
Surface wave alarms clip to the coping and detect the displacement waves that form when a body enters the water. They run $50–$200, most include a wireless receiver that sounds inside the house, and they operate on standard batteries.
The limitation is real: they won't detect a child who enters the water slowly, and wind creates enough surface movement to trigger false alarms. Position one on the still end of the pool, away from return jets, and test it monthly. Most pool professionals treat surface alarms as a backup layer—inexpensive enough to add, not dependable enough to rely on alone.
Subsurface Immersion Sensors
Subsurface sensors mount below the waterline—typically on a return fitting or wall bracket—and detect the pressure wave created when a body hits the water. Because they're fully underwater, they're far less susceptible to wind-triggered false alarms than surface units. Brands like PoolEye and Safety Turtle make subsurface systems that communicate wirelessly to a base station in your home; expect to pay $150–$350 for a complete kit.
Installation requires a pool technician. If you're building new, ask your builder to rough in the mounting point during construction—retrofitting always costs more than planning for it upfront.
Wristband Alarms
Wristband alarms work differently: the child wears a waterproof band that triggers an alarm when submerged. Safety Turtle's system uses a magnetic base station near the pool—when the band hits water, the magnetic connection breaks and an alarm sounds immediately. A complete kit runs $100–$175, with additional bands available for multiple children.
These work particularly well for kids old enough to wander near the pool but not yet strong swimmers. The catch is straightforward: the alarm only works if the child is wearing the band. That's an enforcement challenge, not a technology problem—and it's the most common reason wristband systems fail in practice.
Pool Safety Nets
Safety nets span the entire pool surface and anchor to the deck or coping with stainless steel hardware. Properly installed, they're rated to support adult weight—typically 485 lbs per square foot or higher—which means a child who falls onto the net won't reach the water. Systems from brands like WaterWarden or Safety Pools run $500–$1,500 depending on pool size and shape.
The trade-off is daily commitment. You pull the net off to swim and reinstall it when you're done. Families who commit to the process find it takes two to three minutes. Families who find it inconvenient start skipping it—which defeats the point entirely. Safety nets work best when you build the habit before the season starts, not halfway through.
Safety Net vs. Automatic Cover
An automatic pool cover does everything a safety net does, but with a button press. In under 60 seconds, the pool is fully sealed. Covers rated to support 2,000 or more pounds function as legitimate safety barriers, not just convenience features. The installed cost is significantly higher—$8,000–$20,000 depending on pool size and cover type—but the compliance rate is near-perfect. When the barrier takes five seconds to deploy, it actually gets deployed.

What Carolina Codes Do and Don't Require
North Carolina requires residential swimming pools to have perimeter fencing at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates. South Carolina follows similar IRC-based requirements. Neither state mandates pool alarm systems for private residential pools—they're optional improvements, not legal requirements.
That said, HOAs in the Lake Norman corridor sometimes go further than county code. Communities in Cornelius, Davidson, and Mooresville have ARCs that include alarm system requirements in their pool addendums, separate from what Iredell or Mecklenburg County requires. If you're in an HOA, read the pool guidelines before you build—some are stricter than the county minimum, and retrofitting a required system after the pool is finished always costs more than integrating it during construction.
