Picking the wrong one for your pool means spending money on something that fights you every time you run it.

Suction-side cleaners attach directly to your skimmer or a dedicated suction port and crawl the pool floor using the pull of your existing pump. No separate power source, no extra plumbing — just a hose and a connection point you already have. Quality units run from about $200 to $600, making them the most affordable entry in the category.

The appeal is straightforward: simple installation, cheap replacement parts, and decades of proven performance. For a pool with a clean geometric shape and minimal debris load, a suction-side cleaner handles the job without much fuss.

The limitations show up quickly, though. Because debris gets routed through your pump basket and filter, a heavy organic load — fallen leaves, pine straw, the sand that blows across a Carolina road — strains your filtration system and forces more frequent cleanings. These cleaners also struggle with corners and steps, and because they run on your existing pump, every cleaning hour is an hour your pump is running at full draw.

Pressure-Side Cleaners: Built for Debris-Heavy Yards

Pressure-side cleaners connect to your pool's return lines and use water pressure to propel themselves around the pool. The key difference from suction models: debris gets collected into the cleaner's own bag instead of routing through your main filter. That protects your filtration system and extends the time between backwashes or cartridge cleanings. Expect to spend $400 to $900 for a quality pressure-side unit.

These cleaners perform best in pools surrounded by mature trees — the kind of wooded Carolina backyard that drops pine needles and oak leaves all summer long. When debris volumes are high, a pressure-side cleaner is doing the right job in the right way.

The catch is the booster pump. The most effective pressure-side units, like those made by Polaris, are designed to run on a dedicated booster pump — a separate piece of equipment that runs $300 to $500 installed and adds another motor to your equipment pad. Without a booster pump, pressure-side performance drops noticeably. These cleaners also skip the walls and waterline, so you will still need to brush those surfaces by hand on a regular schedule.

Robotic Cleaners: The Most Complete Clean on the Market

A robotic pool cleaner is its own self-contained machine — separate motor, separate filtration, its own power cord. You drop it in the pool, plug it into a GFCI outlet, and walk away. It does not touch your pump or filter lines at all. Prices start around $700 and climb past $1,800 for top-tier units from brands like Dolphin, Maytronics, and Pentair.

The performance gap over the other two types is real. A quality robotic cleaner scrubs the floor, climbs the walls, and cleans the waterline — all in a single cycle. Its internal filter typically captures particles down to two or three microns, finer than most sand or cartridge filters. It runs on its own power, so your main pump is free to run at lower speeds for circulation while the robot handles cleaning. Many models can be scheduled to run automatically overnight, so the pool is ready to swim first thing in the morning.

Longevity, when you buy right, is a genuine selling point. A well-maintained robotic cleaner from an established brand should last eight to twelve years. The risks are on the low end of the market — budget units from obscure manufacturers often have no local service support and fail after a single season.

Choosing the Right One for Your Pool

For most homeowners building a custom concrete pool in the Carolinas, a robotic cleaner is the right call. It does the most thorough job, it puts no additional load on your filtration system, and it handles irregular shapes — tanning ledges, integrated spas, step benches, grotto nooks — that confuse simpler cleaners.

If upfront cost is the primary constraint and your pool is a clean rectangle in a low-debris yard, a suction-side cleaner is a reasonable place to start. You can always upgrade to a robotic unit later.

Pressure-side cleaners make the most sense in a specific scenario: a debris-heavy yard where running a robotic cleaner nightly feels excessive, and where a booster pump is already plumbed or can be added economically. If your pool was built with a dedicated booster line, a pressure-side unit is worth a close look.

One planning detail that catches homeowners off guard: robotic cleaners need a GFCI outlet within cord reach of the pool — typically 50 to 60 feet. Pressure-side cleaners need a dedicated return line for full performance. Neither is expensive to add during the build, but cutting into finished deck to retrofit them after the fact is a different story.
