Well Water and Your New Pool: What Happens When 20,000 Gallons Comes From Your Own Ground

Plenty of Lake Norman and Piedmont Carolina homes are on well water — and filling a pool from your own ground is a completely different process than running a city water line. Iron, calcium, sulfur, and alkalinity levels that city water treatment handles can ruin a new pool finish in hours if you're not prepared.

The Well Water Difference

Your new pool is cured, the plaster is set, and the contractor hands you the hose. If you're on city water, you turn it on and wait two or three days. But if you're on a well — and plenty of Lake Norman and Piedmont Carolina homeowners are — that moment is where things get complicated fast.

Well water carries what city water doesn't: iron, manganese, calcium, sulfur, and levels of hardness or alkalinity that can swing wildly from one neighborhood to the next. None of those things are inherently dangerous to you, but they can ruin a new pool finish in hours if you're not prepared. Here's what you need to know before the water touches the plaster.

Test Your Well Before You Fill

The single most important step costs about $50 and takes five minutes. Before the pool is even plastered, have your well water tested for a full panel: total dissolved solids (TDS), iron and manganese levels, calcium hardness, total alkalinity, pH, and copper — less common, but present in older well casings.

Most Carolina well water runs moderately hard with a pH in the 6.8–7.6 range, which is manageable for a pool. The problem minerals are iron and manganese. Even 0.3 ppm of iron can stain a fresh plaster or pebble finish permanently within the first 24 hours of fill.

You cannot unring that bell. Stains that bond to a new finish during startup require aggressive acid washing or, in severe cases, early resurfacing. Getting your water tested costs $50–$150. Fixing a stained new plaster can cost several thousand dollars. That math makes the test a no-brainer.

Iron: The Finish's Worst Enemy

Lincoln County, Catawba County, and parts of the southern Iredell corridor are known for well water with elevated iron. It's not universal, but common enough that any experienced pool builder in those markets will ask about your water source before the finish goes on.

If your test comes back at or above 0.3 ppm, you have two practical options. Fill slowly with a metal sequestrant running — a sequestrant binds to metal ions and keeps them suspended rather than letting them bond to the pool surface. You add it as the fill progresses, typically every 8–12 hours during a multi-day fill.

Alternatively, pre-treat at a fill station: some builders connect the fill hose to a temporary iron filter before it reaches the pool. This adds $200–$500 to the project, but eliminates the problem at the source rather than managing it after the fact. Running both a sequestrant and a pre-filter is belt-and-suspenders protection — and for a $60,000–$100,000+ pool, that peace of mind is worth every dollar.

Calcium Hardness and Alkalinity: Get These Right Before You Swim

Well water in the Carolina Piedmont often runs high in calcium. For a pool, you want calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm. Higher than that and you risk scale buildup on your equipment, your waterline tile, and the finish over time. Lower than 150 ppm and the water becomes corrosive — it'll leach calcium directly out of the plaster to rebalance itself.

If your well water tests above 400 ppm, filling partly from the well and diluting with delivered water is a practical fix. Water delivery services operate throughout the Lake Norman area and can bring 5,000–10,000 gallon tanker loads for roughly $150–$350 per load depending on your location.

Total alkalinity should land between 80 and 120 ppm before any other adjustments begin. Well water that runs naturally high in alkalinity — above 150 ppm — will resist pH changes and make startup balancing more difficult.

Don't Rush the Fill: The 12-Hour Pump Rule

A standard residential well pump delivers 5–10 gallons per minute. A 15,000-gallon pool takes 25–50 hours of continuous runtime to fill from a well alone. Two concerns come with that.

First, continuous multi-day pumping can draw down your water table and stress your well pump. Most well contractors recommend running for no more than 10–12 continuous hours, then resting for 4–6 hours before resuming. Your well contractor can advise based on your pump rating and recovery rate.

Second, the fill takes long enough that chemistry shifts as you go. Don't add balancing chemicals until the pool is at least 80% full, and always go in sequence: alkalinity first, then calcium hardness, then pH. Adding concentrated chemicals to a partially filled pool creates concentration spikes that can etch or stain a brand-new finish.

What About Sulfur?

Some well water in the Carolina Piedmont contains trace hydrogen sulfide — that faint rotten-egg smell. Low-level sulfur is usually manageable with proper chlorination and aeration, but higher concentrations create a continuous chemistry battle your sanitizer can never quite win. If your water has any detectable odor before fill begins, flag it to your startup professional. They may recommend a pre-filter or an elevated shock dose on day one.

The right time to address well water chemistry is during the design phase, not after you've pumped 20,000 gallons and discovered a stain on a three-day-old finish.
