Olin is an unincorporated community in Olin Township, about 12 miles north of Statesville in northern Iredell County, sitting near 912 feet of elevation - noticeably higher ground than the Lake Norman shoreline. The name comes from the Olin post office: established in 1852 near Olin Creek (the Middle Fork of Rocky Creek) as the short-lived "New Institute" post office, then renamed in 1856 for Stephen A. Olin, the first president of Randolph-Macon College. Interstate 77 runs the length of Olin Township, giving most builds a direct highway tie-in without the crossroads congestion of denser Iredell towns.

Lots here run large and rural rather than platted subdivision, typical of northern Iredell County acreage.
